Today we had my Rheumatologist appointment and we found out that I do not have Rheumatoid Arthritis but I do have Ankylosing Spondylitis/ Spondyloarthritis. Technically I probably only have Spondyloarthritis but if there is spinal fusion that is Ankylosing Spondylitis. The doctor did not think I had any spinal fusion at this point. The appointment was very informational and we had lots of our questions answered. I have to say I feel relieved to only have 1 diagnosis instead of 2. I know we are still having to deal with an autoimmune disorder and that is still overwhelming. We were given a recommendation for treatment which we are looking into. They were supportive of the AIP diet but felt that additional treatment was necessary due to the Uveitis and additional symptoms.
So what is AS? This website offers a clear description of it: https://www.rheumatology.org/I-Am-A/Patient-Caregiver/Diseases-Conditions/Spondyloarthritis
I am still concerned about the medication but after getting some questions answered I feel less afraid…well kind of. I’m still terrified but now I know what I’m supposed to be afraid of. I am also relieved to know that I can have the potential for treatment for the back pain I have dealt with for the past 15-20 years. I am hopeful that the majority of the aches and pains that i deal with (headaches, back pain, jaw pain) will reduce with treatment. She was even hopeful that I would be able to get through a night of sleep without being woke up with pain. Physical Therapy will still be a big part in my treatment as well as exercise. Movement is Medicine. I will have to be careful to try not to get sick as my immune system is going to have to work harder to fight off illness. There is lots to consider regarding the treatment but thats for another day.
I am feeling optimistic about this and in much better spirits then I was earlier this week. I hope that continues the rest of this week.
